Rid Yourself of Crow's Feet, Frown Lines and More With Botox

One of the most popular and common cosmetic procedures on the market continues to be Botox. This prescription injectable filler can temporarily improve the appearance of frown lines, crow's feet and other fine lines on the face. While it has other uses, such as treating migraines and bladder spasms, Botox remains sought after primarily for its convenient and painless approach to restoring skin's youthful appearance. If you are a resident of Orange County and have been considering an injectable filler, continue reading to learn more about Botox and how the Appearance Center of Newport Beach, conveniently located in Fashion Island, can provide you with safe, convenient and natural looking results.

About Botox

There is a reason why Botox has maintained such popularity among cosmetic procedures. First and foremost, it offers effective results. In addition, Botox is FDA-approved and proven to be a safe procedure. Patients appreciate that the procedure is painless and convenient, taking a short time to complete and requiring little downtime afterward. The medicine in Botox actually comes from a neurotoxin known as botulinum. While this may sound a bit scary, the ingredients derived from the toxin are purified and completely safe.

The toxin is used to paralyze facial muscle movement, leading to the relaxation of lines and wrinkles around the injection site. The primary ingredients of Botox were first used to treat patients with twitching eye muscles. The paralysis of the muscles kept them from their spastic movement, providing patients with relief. However, patients soon began reporting noticeably reduced wrinkles around the eyes. This discovery led scientists to study the ways in which botulinum could be targeted in the reduction of wrinkles. Botox was approved by the FDA in 2002 for its current cosmetic purposes.

Additional Uses of Botox

Botox is most frequently sought to correct wrinkles and lines such as crow's feet around the eyes or frown lines between the brows, there are a number of other cosmetic uses of the injectable. It can be used to treat:

  • Brow asymmetry
  • Chest wrinkles
  • Drooping Mouth Corners
  • Enlarged Jaw Muscles
  • Neck Banding
  • Veertical lip lines

Ideal Candidates

Botox is intended for the treatment of deep wrinkles whose underlying cause can be attributed to overactive facial muscles. Therefore, wrinkles that exist regardless of facial movement will not respond to Botox injections. If you notice lines or wrinkles that appear when you smile, laugh, raise your eyebrows or tighten your neck muscles, you can likely be helped through Botox. Your doctor will assist you in determining whether you are a candidate during your consultation session.

What to Expect

During your treatment, a tiny needle will be used to inject the correct amount of Botox into the targeted muscle that is causing a wrinkle. The medication stops nerve impulses from reaching the treated area, which then weakens the muscle. As a result, the skin above the muscle relaxes, gradually releasing the wrinkle. Within a week's time, the targeted wrinkles should be gone.

You likely won't need anesthetic relief during your session, but you can request a topical numbing agent or use of a cold pack if you are sensitive to pain. Treatments are done in a matter of minutes, and most patients compare the sensation of the injection to that of a pin prick. With no downtime, you can immediately return to your everyday routine. Expect improvement to gradually continue and to last for up to five months. Results do vary, and repeat treatments will be needed.
